We need to talk about the future.
I know the present is pressing enough. We can’t turn around without being faced with a new horror more urgent and overwhelming than the last.
And I know that most days, your heart – like mine – is broken at least once.
The plight of an individual animal is heart-rending and almost overwhelmingly compelling. But our goal – yours and mine – isn’t simply to address specific cases while the disease rages on. We need to be as relentless and single-minded for the animals as agribusiness is ruthless to the animals.
Everything we do should be focused on the bottom line, our singular goal: a world where animals aren’t brutalized and butchered.
If we’re always fighting last week’s battle, if we’re only having our hearts broken and our vision clouded with tears, we will never make actual progress for a better world.
Or, as Thoreau put it: “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.”
If we stop, just for a moment, and step aside from the high profile, the pressing, the heartbreaking…
If we stop and clear our vision, and consider the world we want…
And if we then think clearly about what is necessary for this world, it is inescapable and obvious:
We need to put aside the “urgent” and move past our heartbreak.
We need to strike at the root.
We must be utterly relentless in our pursuit of real, lasting change. Rather than fighting battles, we must invest our limited time and resources into creating real, fundamental, lasting change.
The world you and I want – a world not just a little bit less bad, but a world that is truly better – comes from focused, dedicated, visionary work.
There are no quick fixes. There are no shortcuts. Change must – and will – come from the ground up.
Decades have proven it is the only way to create real, lasting change.
You know striking at the root is what the animals need – which is why you are such a dedicated supporter of our work together.
I’ve said this before, but it remains true. We couldn’t do this without your commitment to this necessary and powerful work.
For the animals,
Matt Ball, Executive Director
