Judge Overturns California Ban on Foie Gras

By Toni Okamoto

We’re sad to announce that California has taken a huge step back by overturning its ban on the sale of foie gras.

It is more important than ever for us to continue spreading veganism, since we obviously can’t rely on laws to protect animals.

Excerpts from The New York Times, January 7th, 2015, Judge Overturns California Ban on Foie Gras:

Foie gras is back on the menu in California. A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a state law barring sale of the fatty duck or goose liver, ending a ban that had lasted more than two years.

Animal rights groups have long decried foie gras, which has traditionally been produced by force-feeding ducks and geese, as inhumane. And in 2004, California became the first state to outlaw it; the ban took effect in 2012.

Many chefs across the state, who had lamented the loss of a favored ingredient and led protests against the ban, exploded in celebration after the ruling was announced. “We are freaking out,” said Jon Shook, one of the chef-owners of Animal in Los Angeles. “The person who buys our foie gras called us from the courthouse crying with happiness.”

  1. This is an outrage!!! There is absolutely no need or call for this practice! It is outright cruelty and must stop!!!

  2. please stop this cruel evil practice!!! These animals are suffering!!! I do not believe in this and agree that it needs to stop now!

  3. This is disgusting. We should be protecting those that can not protect themselves.

  4. This is fucked up. There will always be fucking idiots who just don’t get it. Crying for joy over the resumption of animal cruelty! What an effing loser!

  5. This is cruel, cruel, cruel. What kind of a judge would not put a stop to force feeding, & the terrible mistreatment of these poor, defenseless animals. How could any judge find that this is alright? Just for human consumption? Very, very, wrong. I am appalled & so are alto of people. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. It makes me very ashamed, & embarrassed to be a part of humanity. I am disgusted!!!!!

  6. I thought you are supposed to be more evolved??? In South Africa we know animal rights are few…why do you in California go backwards??? This cruelty IS avoidable, whats wrong with you???

  7. This is awful no animal should suffer so we can have food faster. These companies have tons of money and could buy a few more acres so they could at least have space and graze. It’s sick !!!! Why do people want to consume that anyway? I will never eat duck!!! Stop doing this !!!

  8. You took one step forward but with this ban overturnon the crate issue now you you have taken fhree steps backward Why can’t we keep moving ahead on animal issues instead of backpeddling. That’s why even wildlife is going to hell in a handbasket. Because we can’t seem to keep moving forward being guided by conscience and what is the best interest of all be it animal or human..

  9. Big shame shame shame shame shame on the judge and the chefs should start going vegan and have no meat in their restaurants. If the State of California had purposely banned then there was a very good reason for it and it should be banned for good..

  10. What the hell is wrong with these people? It’s hideous when they get their way and the hell with the pain and suffering of the poor ducks! I hate what this world has become!

  11. It is unconscionable to subject any living sentient being to such immoral cruelty, particularly for the lousy sake of somebody’s stupid tastebuds.

    1. I do understand that many people do not know where this comes from and are unaware of factory farming, but this judge knows. It has been put in his face. He is a man that cannot make sound judgements. This man should never hold office as a judge. He probably eats this tortured fatty liver. I am going to try to get in touch with him. ABUSING ANIMALS IS AGAINST THE LAW. Even if it wasn’t against the law, what kind of person is this. No morals, no ethics. Yes, you can judge a man by the way he treats his animals, and this judge need not say anymore. Period.

  12. Thats cruel, barbaric and have to be ban! Stop to eat Things based on animal cruaty! Ban all this sickeness!

  13. THE JUDGE PROBABLY EATS FOI GRAS. MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD FOLLOW HIM AND FIND OUT AND IF HE’S CAUGHT EATING IT. TAKE A PICTURE AND EXPOSE HIM TOT HE NEWS AND THE NEWSPAPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD AND SHAME HIM FOR PERSONAL REASONS OVER THE SAFETY OF THESE POOR GUY. THEY NEED OUR HELP ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

  14. What about putting a list of restaurants together that serve foie gras and have a protest. It should be around dinner time so that the patrons see the protestors before entering to eat. I do feel that some of those people would care. Also bad press for the restaurant.

  15. This is why we need to make sure who we vote into office! There are so many things like this happening in the US that are wrong and unhumane! Visit your local animal shelter and adopt a pet!
