Turkey Alternatives for Thanksgiving

By Toni Okamoto

Many people feel that vegans miss out on Thanksgiving festivities because they can’t enjoy the traditional dishes, but the truth is — we LOVE Thanksgiving feasts! Because what do vegans care about second most in the world (first being animals) … vegan food, of course!

Compassionate companies like Tofurky, Field Roast, and Gardein make it super easy to replace the dead bird on the table with their delicious vegan turkey alternatives. Just pair their centerpiece with some sides from our Ultimate Vegan Thanksgiving Menu, and you have a fantastic cruelty-free meal to share with friends and family! Here are some of our favorite turkey replacements:

Everything that Tofurky does is amazing, and their Vegetarian Feast is no exception. It’s found in most conventional grocery stores, and has been satisfying vegetarians on Thanksgiving for 21 years! You can read more about how it was created in our interview with Tofurky founder, Seth Tibbott, here.

Field Roast’s Celebration Roast is extremely popular, too! My mouth is watering while reading their description from their website:

“Delightfully seasoned with rubbed sage, garlic and lemon juice, this evolution of our classic Celebration Roast 2 lb features a traditional bread stuffing made with fresh onions, celery, cranberries and butternut squash. As a special accompaniment to the roast, we offer you the perfect portion of our Porcini Mushroom Gravy. Simmered on the stovetop, the gravy combines the dark, rich, earthy flavor of porcini mushrooms with diced shiitakes to create the ultimate vegan gravy. A centerpiece, appetizer or sliced in a sandwich; our new Celebration Roast is still perfect for any occasion.”

The Gardein Holiday Roast is one of my personal favorites. I’ve served it to many omnivores with no complaints, and even with some compliments!

Everything breaded is better, and this Trader Joe’s Breaded Turkey-less Stuffed Roast sounds delightful! From their website:

Driven to make this main course as delicious and desirable as possible, we’ve punched up the wild rice stuffing with bursts of cranberries and coated the roast in crispy breading, seasoned with herbs and red pepper flakes. Now Breaded, our Turkey-less Stuffed Roast with Gravy has never tasted or looked better – eating is believing. All these years and improvements later, we’re selling Breaded Turkey-less Roast for the same best-in-town-value of $9.99 for each 40 ounce package.
